Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th December.

There was this old saying that the late Kevin (Bear) Brogden (President) use to say, always treat them well and they will always come back. Many people might think what in the hell has this got to do with the Bundaberg Cycling Club. I would say many things as the bear was very much the driving force and for most parts the Mainstay behind The Bundaberg Cycling Club’s annual 4BU Cycling Spectacular.  

It was fitting in many parts that the Velodrome was renamed shortly after his passing in his Honour, becoming the Kevin Brogden Memorial Velodrome. I’m sure he wouldn’t have like the fuss, but all the same knowing Kev he would have felt proud and honoured all the same.  

Just on 12 months ago, Bundaberg Cycling Club President met with a few people to discuss some things, the issue of Track racing and the track carnival was a major focus point. It was from not only this discussion but a few preceding this one that the rebirth of an Icon began to come to life.  

The Planning and execution of many and various tasks began, A Track Carnival Committee was formed, Sponsors were sort and ideas was sourced and taken on board. A working name for the event was created in the Bundy Cup on Wheels; this was given the approval to run with as a working name, but it was always the desire of the committee to eventually revert back to the heritage name of the 4BU cycling spectacular, this meant negotiation would need to be opened up with Local radio Station Bundaberg Broadcasters who are the owner of the 4BU station.  This happen without any trouble and the 4BU Cycling Spectacular was returned and signed off on. The Bundaberg Cycling Club’s relationship with 4BU was set to saw again.   

It was only a few short weeks Later that yet another magical Moment in the rebirth of this Icon Sporting Event when Local and National Business Giant in Bundaberg Sugar, via their GM of Marketing picked up the phone and called the Bundaberg Cycling Club, this is a moment when a lot of the planning started to pay off, This phone call was Bundaberg Sugar signing on as Co-naming Rights sponsor, This is when the 4BU Cycling Spectacular “Bundaberg Sugar Cup on Wheels” took some real shape.

These couple of moments really helped shape the return of this well known and loved event. Weeks and months have flown by since those early days, The Wonderful local support of the many local business, Families and Supporters has been over whelming. Joining the event sponsorship ranks have been business’s like Bundaberg Sugar, Boylans, Bed r Us, Brumby’s Uptown, A 2 Z 4 X 4, NQX, News-Mail, Morrison Sport, Coca Cola, 4BU, Bundaberg Christian College, Tyrepower, Allan Zunker, Keyworth Family, Mal McDougall, Peter Davis Construction, Robbie Moodie Electrical, Specialized, Incitec, Sunfam AWD, J & R McCracken, Coral Cove Resort and many more.  

On spreading the word on the return to the cycling calendar of the 4BU Cycling Spectacular “Bundaberg Sugar Cup on Wheels” it became quite clear of the great love people have and have had for this event over the years past, People spoke with great conviction and passion about the great times they had traveling to Bundaberg and competing in this event. They also spoke of the absolute joy that it was returning after 8 years to the QLD cycling Calender.   

Many aspects of the carnival have remained the same from the old days, along with some new focus and direction, The Howard Hill has undergone redevelopment to provide greater area and comfort for the Howard Clan to enjoy the racing, it would be hoped that the Spiritual leader on the hill will be there in full force, I’m sure the Riders will love passing by Howard Hill coming off the main straight with the Men on the Hill Cheering them on, while they enjoy the odd icy Cold XXXX.  

So here we are today, just under 3 week left until the 4BU Cycling Spectacular “Bundy Sugar Cup on Wheels” returns to the Kevin Brogden Memorial Velodrome, bringing with it the best in cycling action there is to be seen today, Local Hero current Commonwealth Games Champion, International Superstar of Cycling Allan Davis will for the first time in many years take to the track to compete against some wonderful cycling talent, headline by his Brother Scott who is also an International  star and Former World Champion and Home town hero himself, Joining the boys will be some of the current stars of the sport in Michael Hepburn, Casey Munro, Glen Chadwick, James Glasspool, World Champion Ashley Hutchinson to name a few.  

Add to this outstand numbers of junior competitors and some great masters and women competitor as well and it is all shaping up well for a huge successful return of this Cycling Icon. There will be Kids as young as 4 out there riding there bike for you all to see.  

It’s time for the Bundaberg Public to stand up and cheer, it’s time to stand up and get your backside track side as the hottest and classiest elite men’s field to ever grace a Cycling Spectacular will be arriving in just under 3 week’s time.  

2 days racing, Over 80 events, World Champions, World Medallists, Commonwealth Champions, Oceania Champions, State Champions, National Champions, New Zealand Champions and Tour De France riders, they are all going to be here.  

Bring your mum, Bring your Brother, bring your family, come and enjoy this life changing experience as the Bundaberg cycling club bring you the 2010 4BU Cycling Spectacular Bundy Sugar Cup on Wheels.

A list of national and international former and current world champions in attendance, including Ashley Hutchinson, world Track champion in 2004 and a part of the Australian team who broke the 4 minute barrier in the track pursuit, and one of Australia’s all time legends of the sport, multiple world, Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion, Sara Carrigan OAM on hand to share their success with the next generation Queensland stars of the road and track.

The night was opened by Mr Mike Victor OAM, the President of Cycling Queensland and recently awarded the UCI Merit Award by the international Cycling Union for his services to the Australian Cycling Federation and followed by the Honourable Steve Kilburn MP.

Consisting of four categories, Junior Cyclists of the year, Masters Cyclists of the year, Para-cyclists of the year and major awards; Elite Cyclists of the year including club, media, volunteer and coach of the year awards were shared between clubs from across the state.

On the back of World Junior Road and Track Championships in 2010 Jordan Kerby and Jay McCarthy both from Fraser Coast Club were winners in their age category (U/19 Road and Track Cyclists of the Year) respectively while 2009 Australian Senior Track Championships Team Sprint Silver Medallist Rebecca Stevenson from the Rockhampton club took out the Female U/19 Track Cyclist of the year. For Jordan, this was the beginning of a very successful night for the young Fraser Coast cyclist.

The masters’ categories saw a spread of club winners from Patricia Palmer from Ffast club taking out the Masters Women 1-2 Road Cyclist of the Year to Grand Master Road Cyclist of the Year Chass Matters of BCRI.

Bryce Lindores was the major winner in the Para-cyclists categories for season 2010 taking out the Para-Cyclist of the Year award along with the Tandem Team Blind and Visually Impaired Cyclist of the Year award, capping off a sensational season for Bryce and his pilot Sean Finning. Other winners included David Nicholas of Mackay club in the Single Bike (CP & Locomotive) Cyclist of the Year and Hand Cyclist of the Year Jarrod Moncur of Balmoral club.

With the night’s formalities coming to a close the major award categories including Club, Coach and Cyclist of the Year were announced. With names such as multiple World, Commonwealth and Olympic Games legend Anna Meares four-time champion, three-time winner and Tour De France legend Robbie McEwan and four-time winner and World Champion Kenrick Tucker who are all previous winners of the prestigious Queensland Cyclist of the Year, now the next generation will be added to the trophy in the form of Jordan Kerby. Kerby who is quickly becoming a star of the sport having represented his country in the World Junior Championships in August 2010 was part of the Pursuit Team that beat the team from Great Britain by over three seconds to take Gold in a time of 4.05.209.

While Kerby became the next name on the Cyclist of the Year trophy Ruth Corset topped off an amazing season, as a young mother of two beautiful children she took out the Elite Female Road Cyclist of the Year a month after representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Emily Rosemond has too recently returned from Commonwealth Games was awarded the Elite Female Track Cyclist of the Year. Meanwhile Bevan Mason of Townsville took out the Elite Male Road Cyclist of the Year, Michael Hepburn won the Elite Male Track Cyclist of the Year and Mitchell Mulhern took home the Men’s U23 Road Cyclist of the Year.

Amateur Coach of the Year went to Stan Brims of the Goldstars Cycling Club who during the past 12 months has dedicated much of his time to his role as Goldstars Club Coach.  He also personally directed the development of the clubs high-performance junior development program, while also playing a pivotal as State Junior Coach of both the Road and Track State Junior teams. Stan has been in the development of both Jesse Kerrison and, until recently, Emily Roper, both of whom have represented Queensland with honour locally and on the National stage.

With many clubs in attendance the excitement grew for the impending announcement of the Cycling Queensland Club of the Year taken out by Dutton Cycles R&R who along with a list of achievements since their inception in 2007 have introduced organised rides on both Saturday and Sunday each weekend to cater for all levels of riders from junior novices to skilled elite riders.  In 2010 the club held an introduction to racing session at Nundah, monthly skills training sessions at North lakes as well as regular club and social activities.  Dutton Cycles R&R also hosts track training and simulated racing at Caboolture Velodrome.

Of course the sport would not be as successful domestically and internationally if it were not for the outstanding contribution by our volunteers, club support networks and officials who continually back up each week to plan, setup, coach and administer competition and training. This year two outstanding individuals took home the Volunteer of the Year and the CEO’s Award in recognition of their dedication and contribution to the sport throughout an ongoing period. We congratulate and thank Mr Jim Cockerill of the Balmoral CC as Volunteer of the Year and Mr Ken Mitchell of the Gold Coast CATS Club in 2010 and no-doubt, beyond.  In addition the first ever Official of the Year was awarded to Tim Francis of the Goldstars club ensuring that our commissaires are duely recognised for all their hard work!

All the staff and board would like to congratulate all our award winners and finalists for season 2010 and to all guests we thank you for your attendance! Congratulations lso to Kaylene O'Connell who took home the lucky door prize of a fantastic carbon frame thanks to our sponsor Swift Carbon.  Furthermore thank you to the sponsors who provided raffle prizes: Lifecycle, Dutton Cycles, Activ Cycle Coaching, Gatorade, MB Cycles, DMT Shoes, Catlike Helmets, Gold Coast Tourism and Bella Velo.

Wow – what an achievement!  Thank you so much for your amazing passion and dedication to cycle on Sunday as a Green Team participant for Diabetes Australia – Queensland in the Wilson HTM Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge.  Getting to know our team, we truly feel like a united family with a common goal to chip away at turning diabetes around. 

We hope you enjoyed the day and if we didn’t get a chance to meet you, or you were unable to ride, bring on 2011!

Also attached is Notice 74 (19 October 2010 previously distributed) calling for applications for team management positions for the Senior Australian Track Championships to be held in Sydney 29 Jan – 6 Feb 2011.  There are still vacancies on the senior team to be filled and in particular the role of ‘Manager’.

The Rules:

1. Rule 1:

   Obey The Rules.

2. Rule 2:

   It is forbidden for someone familiar with The Rules to knowingly assist another person to breach them.¹

3. Rule 3:

   No matter how good you think your reason is to knowingly breach The Rules, it is never good enough.

4. Rule 4:

   It is, absolutely, without question, unequivocally, about the bike.  Anyone who says otherwise is obviously a twatwaffle.

5. Rule 5:

   Harden The xxxx Up.^2,14

6. Rule 6:

   Free your mind and your legs will follow.

7. Rule 7:

   Tan lines should be cultivated and kept razor sharp.  Under no circumstances should one be rolling up their sleeves or shorts in an effort to somehow diminish one’s tan lines.  Sleeveless jerseys are under no circumstances to be employed.

8. Rule 8:

   Saddles, Bars, and Tires³:

   • Match the saddle to the bars and the tires to black; or
   • Match the bars to the color of the frame at the top of the head tube and the saddle to the color of the frame at the top of the seat tube and the tires to the color where they come closest to the frame; or
   • Match the saddle and the bars to the frame decals; or
   • Black, black, black

9. Rule 9:

   If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass.  Period.

10. Rule 10:

    It never gets easier, you just go faster. To put it another way, per Greg Henderson: “Training is like fighting with a gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the gorilla is tired.”⁴

11. Rule 11:

    Family does not come first.  The bike does.

12. Rule 12:

    The minimum number of bikes one should own is three.  The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned.  This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner.

13. Rule 13:

    #DELETE Gun Check has been moved to The Lexicon.

14. Rule 14:

    Team-issue shorts should be black, with the possible exception of side-panels, which may match the rest of the team kit.

15. Rule 15:

    Black shorts, or at least standard team-kit shorts, must be worn with Championship jerseys and race leadership jerseys, or accept that you will look like a douche.

16. Rule 16:

    Championship and race leader jerseys must only be worn if you’ve won the championship or led the race.

17. Rule 17:

    Wearing team kit is also questionable if you’re not paid to wear it.  If you must fly the colours of Pro teams, all garments should match perfectly, i.e no Mapei jersey with Kelme shorts and Telekom socks.

18. Rule 18:

    No road jerseys or Lycra bibs when riding off-road.  (Cyclocross is a middle-ground.  Best to wear cross-specific kit.)

19. Rule 19:

    No mountain jerseys or baggies when riding on the road.  (Cyclocross is a middle-ground.  Best to wear cross-specific kit.)

20. Rule 20:

    The remedies:

    • If your quads start to burn, shift forward to use your hamstrings and calves.
    • If your calves or hamstrings start to burn, shift back to use your quads.
    • If you feel wimpy and weak, see Rule 5 and get out and train more!

21. Rule 21:

    Knickers, vests, arm warmers, shoe covers, and caps beneath your helmet can all make you look like a hardman, when the weather warrants it.

22. Rule 22:

    Cycling caps can be worn under helmets, but never when not riding, no matter how hip you think you look. This will render one a douche, and should result in public berating or beating.    The only time it is acceptable to wear a cycling cap is while directly engaged in cycling activities and while clad in cycling kit.  This includes activities taking place prior to and immediately after the ride such as machine tuning and tire pumping.  Also included are cafe appearances for pre-ride espressi and post-ride pub appearances for body-refueling ales (provided said pub has sunny, outdoor patio – do not stray inside a pub wearing kit or risk being ceremoniously beaten by leather-clad biker chicks).   Under these conditions, having your cap skull-side tipped jauntily at a rakish angle is, one might say, de rigueur.  All good things must be taken in measure, however, and as such it is critical that we let sanity and good taste prevail: as long as the first sip of the relevant caffeine or hop-based beverage is taken whilst beads of sweat, snow, or rain are still evident on one’s brow then it is legitimate for the cap to be worn. However, once all that remains in the cranial furrows is salt, it is then time to shower, throw on some suitable après-ride attire (a woollen Molteni Arcore training top circa ’73 comes to mind) and return to the bar, folded copy of pastel-coloured news publication in hand, ready for formal fluid replacement. It is also helpful if you are a Giant of the Road, as demonstrated here, rather than a giant douchebag. ⁴

23. Rule 23:

    If it’s not cold or wet and you are still wearing shoe covers because you’re a pussy, your name is probably George Hincapie.

24. Rule 24:

    Speeds and distances shall always be referred to and calculated in kilometers.  This includes while discussing cycling in the workplace with your non-cycling coworkers, serving to further mystify our sport in the web of their Neanderthalic cognitive capabilities.  As the confused expression spreads across their unibrowed faces, casually mention your shaved legs. All of cycling’s monuments are measured in the metric system and as such the English system is forbidden.

25. Rule 25:

    The bikes on top of your car should be worth more than the car.  Or at least be relatively more expensive.  Basically, if you’re putting your Huffy on your Rolls, you’re in trouble, mister.

26. Rule 26:

    There is definitely an “optimal” angle at which the pedals should be when photographing a bicycle.  That angle depends on what the photo wants to say, but is probably around the 30 degree mark.  Not 90 or 180.

27. Rule 27:

    Sock and short length should be like Golidlocks, not too long and not too short.  (Disclaimer: despite Sean Yates’ horrible choice in shorts length, he is a quintessential hard man of cycling and is deeply admired by the Velominati.  Whereas Armstrong’s short and sock lengths are just plain wrong.)  No socks is a no-no, as are those ankle-length ones that should only be worn by female tennis players.

28. Rule 28:

    Socks can be any damn colour you like.  White is old school cool.  Black is good, but once again were given a bad image by a Texan whose were too long.  DeFeet Wool-E-Ators rule.

29. Rule 29:

    Saddle bags have no place on a road bike, and are only acceptable on mountain bikes in extreme cases.

30. Rule 30:

    Ditto for frame-mounted pumps.  Either Co2 cannisters or mini-pumps should be carried in jersey pockets.  The only exception to this rule  is to mount a Silca brand frame pump in the rear triangle of the frame, with the rear wheel skewer as the pump mount nob, as demonstrated by members of the 7-Eleven and Ariostea pro cycling teams. As such, a frame pump mounted upside-down and along the left (skewer lever side) seat stay is both old skool and euro and thus acceptable.  We restate at this time that said pump may under no circumstances be a Zefal and must be made by Silca.  It is acceptable to gaffer-tape a mini-pump to your frame when no C02 cannisters are available and your pockets are full of spare kit and energy gels.  However, the rider should expect to be stopped and questioned and may be required to empty pockets to prove there is no room in them for the pump.  Said Silca pump must be fitted with a Campagnolo head.

31. Rule 31:

    Spare tubes, multi-tools and repair kits should be stored in jersey pockets, or in a converted bidon in a cage on bike.  Or, use one of these.

32. Rule 32:

    Hydration packs are never to be seen on a road rider’s body.  No argument will be entered into on this.

33. Rule 33:

    Legs are to be carefully shaved at all times.  If, for some reason, your legs are to be left hairy, make sure you can dish out plenty of hurt to shaved riders, or be considered a hippie douche on their way to a Critical Mass.

34. Rule 34:

    Mountain bike shoes and pedals have their place.  On a mountain bike.

35. Rule 35:

    Road helmets can be worn on mountain bikes, but never the other way around.  No visors on the road.  If you want shade, see Rule 21.

36. Rule 36:

    Eyewear shall be cycling specific, i.e no Aviator shades or clip-on covers for reading glasses.

37. Rule 37:

    The arms of the eyewear shall always be placed over the helmet straps.  No exceptions.  We don’t know why, it’s just the way it is.

38. Rule 38:

    #DELETE You should not make a habit of riding without eyewear, although approved extenuating circumstances include fog, overheating, and lighting conditions.

39. Rule 39:

    You should never leave home without your eyewear.  You should not make a habit of riding without eyewear, although approved extenuating circumstances include fog, overheating, and lighting condition.  When not worn over the eyes, they should be neatly tucked into the vents of your helmet.  If they don’t fit, buy a new helmet.  In the meantime you can wear them backwards on the back of your head or carefully tuck them into your jersey pocket, making sure not to scratch them on your tools (see item 20).

40. Rule 40:

    Tires are to be mounted with the label centered directly over the valve stem.  Pro mechanics do it because it makes it easier to find the valve.  You do this because that’s the way pro mechanics do it.  This will save you precious seconds while your fat ass sits on the roadside fumbling with your CO2 after a flat.  It also looks better for photo opportunities.

Membership categories are determined by the age of a person in each given membership year. As at 1st October every year members are invited to purchase licenses for the following calendar year.  This means that many cyclists (but mainly juniors) will move up into a new age category.

In this instance the following conditions apply when determining which age category must be ridden:

Track Events

The member must ride in their new age category for 2011.
e.g. Fred who is born in 1998 who rode as an Under 13 in 2010 will be required to ride in the Under 15's from 1st October.

Road Events

The member is required to ride in their existing age category until 31st December 2010 even if they renew their licence for 2011.
e.g. Fred will continue to ride Under 13's at events in 2010 even if he renews his licence for 2011.

Note 1: When entering an event using the online entry system all members have already been rolled over into their new membership category, even if they have not renewed yet for 2011.  Therefore the entry system may place you in the incorrect division and charge you the incorrect entry fee.
Therefore if you wish to enter a road event between 1/10/2010 and 31/12/2010 (e.g. Darren Smith Cycle Classic, Hinkler Central International Criterium) and you would be in a new age category in 2011, you need to submit a Manual Entry Form instead.

Note 2: All members who have moved from Junior Under 17 to Junior Under 19 are required to obtain an Open Grading before they can enter an event.

Note 3: If juniors are seeking an exemption to ride in the higher age category for road events between 1/10/2010 and 31/12/2010 a submission must be made in writing indicating the reasons and include signed confirmation from their coach of their ability to satisfactorily handle the higher gearing.  Once the rider competes in the older age category they are not permitted to return to the younger age classification. 
The request should be addressed to the 'Board of Cycling Queensland' and sent via email to qld.info@cycling.org.au, faxed to (07) 3390 2852 or posted to PO Box 4115, Gumdale, QLD, 4154 at least 14 days prior to the event.
